Reasons Why You May Want to Remove the Stump:
Here are some reasons why you may want to consider grinding the stump on your property.
1) Stumps attract pests! When a stump has begun to decay, the dead wood makes an irresistible home for pests, such as carpenter ants and termites. Unfortunately, these pests are not content to stay put, but will expand into other healthy trees and even your home. In these cases, the best course of action is to grind the stump, and get rid of the potential hazard.
2) They get in the way! They have to be avoided when mowing the lawn, or playing football or soccer with your kids. You have to be careful not to run into it, trip over it. They also get in the way of any projects, such as gardens, for example.
3) They hinder you from planting new trees or plants. Even though the tree was cut down, the root system from that tree is still in place, taking up space and nutrients that could be used by other plants.
4) They are an eyesore. Let’s admit it. There is just nothing beautiful about a stump in the yard. It is an ugly reminder that there is something in the yard that is unfinished.

Are There Different Ways of Eliminating a Stump?
Yes! Here are a few of the most common methods that are used. Stumps can be:
1) Dug Out
If it was a small tree, it may just be plausible to dig it up the roots and remove the whole thing. If the roots haven’t begun to go down too deeply, this may be a possibility.
The approach here would be to dig around it, first. This helps to expose the surrounding roots. Then, you can see well enough to start breaking up the roots into smaller parts. We recommend using a tool called a root saw, as this helps you to make your cuts more precisely.
After you’ve cut up the roots sufficiently, you will need something to pull it out. Keep in mind, that even though a root may look small, it can still be quite heavy.
2) Burned. If you are unable to dig out the roots, another option sometimes used is to burn it. Of course, you’ll need to first check with your local laws about burning to make sure you’re doing everything legally, but this is another possibility.
The key here is to make sure the stump stays in the center of the fire. You can put wood on the sides and on the top; stay at it for several hours, as it will take a while to break down the stump and roots. After a while, you’ll be left with the remains. Then you’ll need to dig it out and replace the hole with new soil.
3) Eliminated with chemicals. Another possibility is the use of chemicals. Drill a hole in the top of the stump. You’ll need to drill down about 9 inches or so. Pour in a mix of water and some nitrogen rich substance, such as a compost or even blood meal. Pour this mixture down into the holes and wait several weeks. What happens is that the mixture will accelerate the decay process and weaken the stump. After a while, it may be easier to go back in, break up the roots and the dig it out.
4) Eliminated by Stump Grinding. This is one of the most popular, and maybe the best method. This is especially true for stumps that came from bigger trees, as the possibility of digging it up are either difficult or very expensive. Stump grinding is where we use heavy operating equipment to literally grind down the stump to nothing. We go all the way down to the roots. This allows us to neutralize any future growth. It has the exact same effect as complete removal for a fraction of the price.

Is It Ok To Do it Myself?
Removing a stump is a lot more complicated and involved that it may seem. For example, when using a stump grinder, it is essential that certain safety precautions be observed. While stump grinding is very effective, it is also potentially very dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing, or if you are operating the machinery in a way that it was not intended. Make sure that you get some training before attempting to use a stump grinder.
